We at the Southern Animal Welfare League are concerned about the preceding questions, plus a lot more.
We are looking for people who share our heart-break over animal abuse and neglect.
To cure this problem it will take a lot of education as well as some political action.
The reason the conditions in our communities do not improve is because there is not a public outcry.
To accomplish all the things we want to, we need people to join us to make our dream a reality. It will require many hands, hearts and voices.
If we have enough members our voices will bring chance.
Join us today so we can start to make the lives of animals better. They do not have a voice... WE DO!
How we got started
The Southern Animal Welfare League was started by a few people getting together back in January 2005 and asking why the animal welfare laws are not being enforced in some counties and why is there so much animal cruelty and neglect in our state.
We met for one and a half years, coming up with plans to help animals. On June 26th , 2006 we had our first community meeting in Florence. After that meeting people were asking for more meetings.
We have been having monthly meetings in Florence ever since.
Our home base is Florence, S.C. but we also have a Chapter in Hartsville which covers all of Darlington County. We hope to have Chapters all over S.C. and then move into other southern states, because people and voices are the only things that can help the animals.
We are big advocates for stopping the terrible game of dog and cock fighting and are behind our elected officials to bring this to a stop.
In the past year we have been instrumental in helping to get the Hog/Dog fighting bill passed, which helped get tougher penalties for Cock fighting in S.C.
We build and donate dog houses for dogs in need of a safe shelter, either because they have no house or they are living out of a plastic barrel. This project is called: “Roofs4Rover”.
If we see an animal that has a plastic dog house that is in direct sun light, we will ask the owner if we can donate a tarp, lumber and such so the dog can have some shade in the summer. Unfortunately, there is not a law requiring an animal has shade, yet. We hope to work on this in the near furture.
We did a study last year by placing a thermostat inside a plastic dog house that was in direct sunlight, the results, five degrees hotter inside the dog house than the temperature was outside. While in the shade the over all temperature was about ten degrees cooler. This is why we feel wooden dog houses are the better choice.
We are always working on contacting our Senate and House of Representatives to support laws that help the animals of S.C
We go to court hearings in support of Law Enforcement handling a case and also the animals. We talk to prosecutors to ask that the person be charged the maximum allowed by law.
We are hoping to get a educational program started in schools as early as this coming 2008/2009 school year.
I could go on and on, however one of the most important parts of what we stand for is spaying and neutering, we would like to help fund a low cost spay/neuter clinic in the more rural areas where people can bring in their pets closer to their home. The whole reason thousands of animals are being put down ever year is because there is not enough homes for them.
Also we want our fundraisers to be FUN !
Roofs4Rover
We started this program because we noticed so many dogs living out of plastic 55 gallon barrels, travel crates, chained under trees with little shelter from the elements or chained out in an open field with out any shelter at all.

This dog and many others like her are why we need to continue our Roofs4Rover campaign.
Your donations will help us continue building houses for these animals. You can either donate money or gift cards from Home Depot, Lowes or you favorite lumber yard.
